In the event of the death of your familiy member or any muslim individual, first thing you do is inform proper authorities. If the subject died in hospital, then hospital is the proper authority to provide information to the Health and Human Services of the County where death happened. As a family member get the facilities name, number and the doctor who pronounced the death. This will be used later by the funeral home to get the burial certificate.
If you or anyone in your family know the process, they can go the County and get a Death Certificate and burial permit. Burial permit gives you the authority to dispose the remains. Many people use Funeral Homes, who can get all the necessary paperwork done and get the burial permit ready. Islamic Cemetery of California works with all funeral homes who meet our guidelines of burial.
After burial permit is issued, family members can now start the final prepartion for burial. For this, we as Muslims, we wash the body and shroud the body. This can be arranged at the Funeral Homes if they have the facility, or you can do at your choosing where you find it convenient. You are given 24 hours from the time of pronounced death to the burial. After 24 hours then you are required to place the remains in the cold storage.
The funeral home or your immediate family member contacts Islamic Cemetery of California in Lodi to see what time the burial can take place. We have a 7/24 hour phone and our Manager can tell you what time the grave will be ready for burial. This is very important because Cemetery Manager may have few other burials going that day and his answer is final. Once you know the time for burial, you can prepare the body, inform the family members and get prepared for Janaza Prayers.
When the remains are brought to the Cemetery for burial, it is important that you have the Burial Certificate from the County where death occured. Also a burial contract, cemetery form, must be filled and all dues paid before the Cemetery Manager gives permission to bring the remains out from the hearse. When the remains arrive at the Cemetery, the Cemetery Manager is in control and please follow his instructions. Delays are often caused when people do not listen to the Cemetery Manager. The family should have a point of contact who cordinates with the Cemetery Manager.
Once the Cemetery Manager gives the approval to unload, please use caution and remove the remains and put on the table as advised by the Cemetery Manager. Janaza Prayers are to be performed at the place designated by the Cemetery Manager. After the Janaza Prayers, the family members can carry their loved one to the grave side on the gurney.
At the graveside only immediate family members are permitted before the remains the laid to rest. Cemetery Manager can guide you on the procedures to lower the remains into the grave. After the remains is put into the grave, the Cemetery Manager will put the lid to the crypt. After the crypt is in place, the family point of contact can call those present to come and do their final respect. Cemetery Manager will be available for any advise. Once the grave is filled with dirt, and after burial rituals are completed, the family point of contact must make sure that no trash is left behind. The burial box is to be taken back by the funeral home. Otherwise, the family members should dispose it in the trash container in the Cemetery.
